The winds of Bol

Wind shapes a day in Bol more than anything else. Locals name the winds by the direction they blow from:

  • Maestral (north-west): the summer wind. It usually builds from late morning, blows through the afternoon and dies down at sunset. It cools the beaches and is the reason Bol is a windsurfing centre.
  • Bura (north-east): cold, dry and gusty, mostly in autumn and winter. Strong bura can stop catamarans and sometimes ferries.
  • Jugo (south-east): warm and damp, with waves and often rain. It builds over a day or two and makes the sea rough on the south side of Brač.
  • Tramontana (north) and levant (east) blow less often; calm mornings are common all year.

Before a windy-day crossing, check the notices on our getting to Bol page and with the operator. Windsurfing schools and rentals are in active Bol.
