The winds

  • Maestral (north-west): the summer afternoon breeze. It cools the beaches and powers the windsurfers off Zlatni rat.
  • Bura (north-east): a cold, gusty wind, mostly in winter. Strong bura can stop catamarans.
  • Jugo (south-east): warm and humid, with waves and often rain. It can make the crossing rough.

On windy days check our getting to Bol page for cancellations: catamarans stop before car ferries do.

Who should come when

  • Families: late June or early September, when the sea is warm and the beaches are less crowded.
  • Windsurfers: June to September, for the afternoon maestral.
  • Hikers and cyclists: May, late September and October, when Vidova gora is cooler.
  • Budget travellers: May, June or September, when accommodation costs less than in July and August.
