When to use this route
If you are driving up the coast from Dubrovnik or staying on the Makarska Riviera, this crossing is shorter than driving to Split. There are fewer sailings than on the Split to Supetar line, so plan around the timetable.
The best crossing on summer weekends
This is the only car ferry to Brač where your ticket also reserves a place on the sailing you choose. On the Split to Supetar ferry cars board in the order they arrive, and on summer Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the queues at Split port can be long.
So if you arrive in high season on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, Makarska to Sumartin is often the smarter choice, even if you are coming from Split: no waiting in Split, a guaranteed place, and a slightly shorter drive from Sumartin to Bol.
- Book a few days ahead on the Jadrolinija website or in the mJadrolinija app. Weekend sailings fill up.
- Arrive at the port at least 45 minutes before departure; in summer Jadrolinija asks for an hour.
The drive to Bol
From Sumartin the road runs west across the island through stone villages before dropping down to Bol on the south coast. Follow the signs for Bol, and see our sat-nav warnings before you set off.
